Alpaca Enghaugen and Ringstad Farm Lille
Alpaca Enghaugen
In 2006, our passion for alpaca farming began to blossom. With limited knowledge of these fascinating animals from South America, curiosity took over and we began to explore their world. After extensive research and rewarding conversations with experienced breeders, we took the bold step of investing in two pregnant mares. The wait for the mares to give birth was an exciting time. When they finally arrived into the world, we felt like proud parents of our newborn alpaca babies. We quickly realized that alpacas are wonderful creatures to be around – friendly, curious and easy to handle. Our early decision to focus on breeding and breeding quality led to the recognition of the need to import outstanding breeding stock from Australia. This was a significant investment, but the results have undoubtedly been well worth it. Through the introduction of these animals, we have improved the genetics of our herd and achieved significant success in our breeding efforts. Today we are proud to present our wonderful alpaca herd, and it is a true joy to watch their growth and development. We have gained valuable knowledge about caring for these animals and running a farming business along the way. The journey has been challenging, yet incredibly rewarding. We are proud to be part of the alpaca farming community and look forward to continuing to cultivate this amazing species.
Ringstad Farm
Enghaugen is an integral part of Ringstad Gård Lille. In the 1930s, Harald and Alise Ringstad built their own home on the farm and named the place Enghaugen. With its location on a hill and surrounded by a meadow, the choice of name was natural. Much has changed since then. From being an award-winning ornamental garden, Enghaugen has now evolved into a natural plot, without awards as a reward. Today, the garden serves as a play area for the dogs, and the beautiful flower beds have been transformed into a natural plot that makes room for wild flowers that thrive at their own pace. The traditional sheep that once grazed on the meadow have now been replaced by alpacas. Ringstad Gård Lille has roots dating back to around 1740, and throughout history the farm has been the basis of life for those who have lived here. While traditional farming is often reserved for larger farms or joint ventures in today's agriculture, here at Enghaugen, Ringstad Gård Lille, we want to give the farm a "new life". The idea of alpaca farming was sown in 2006, and since then we have gradually realized this vision. The original main house, built in 1740 and extended in 1840, has been beautifully restored and is today in good condition. The barn, which was once reduced to ruins, has now been rebuilt. The brewery has undergone restoration, and the hen house now stands in all its glory. The old forge has been converted into an office, and we are proud to have our own library as an extra gem on the farm.

DNA testing
We have introduced DNA testing for our breeding animals as an important part of our alpaca breeding practice. This gives us insight into the colours that different alpacas can potentially produce in their offspring, depending on both the mare and stallion DNA. DNA testing has evolved to become an essential tool for alpaca breeders worldwide. It not only allows us to predict and breed for specific colours, but also provides valuable information about genetic inheritance. Rather than spending years speculating on what colours our breeding stock may carry in their genes, we now carry out annual DNA tests on our selected breeding animals. It is important to emphasise that while colour is a factor, we are equally focused on producing healthy, quality animals with fantastic fibre. DNA testing serves as a useful tool for those who wish to target breeding for a specific colour, whilst maintaining a focus on overall health and fibre quality.
